More Providers Needed!

We are actively recruiting more providers to join our team. Please contact clinicmanager@avicennahealth.org with interest or questions.

Providers volunteer on Sunday afternoons at our main clinic and Friday afternoons at a local shelter. Please refer below for more details!

  • Opened in 2009, Avicenna is a community health center that provides free primary care medical services to uninsured and underinsured members of our community. We promote holistic, preventive, and curative medical care.

  • Our main clinic is located at 201 W Kenyon Road in Champaign. We also provide walk-up medical services at a local homeless shelter at 70 E Washington St in Champaign.

  • Our main clinic runs Sundays from 1 to 4 PM. Our shelter services operate Fridays from 3:30 to 5:30 PM.

  • We see patients ages 18 and older for acute complaints (consistent with convenient care), chronic disease management, and health maintenance.

In 2022, we had 175 total patient visits. As of July 2023, we have already seen 133 visits!

  • Physicians, APRNs, and PAs may volunteer as providers. Providers should be licensed in family medicine, internal medicine, or emergency medicine. Providers are asked to commit one shift per quarter (4 per year).

  • We ask volunteer providers to arrive 5 minutes before the start of their scheduled shift. This gives you time to prepare for the day's patients while our medical student and undergraduate volunteers assist with patient registration, rooming, and intake. Our student volunteers will take the patient's vitals and gather information about their HPI, history, and medications to begin populating the patient's chart. After this discussion, the volunteer will report their findings to you and the two of you will return to see the patient. While you are speaking with the patient, our student volunteer will help you document the encounter in the EMR (AthenaNet) and enter appropriate patient orders.

  • Each provider will have 1 to 2 student volunteers to help gather information from patients and document the visit in the EMR. There is also a clinic manager present to oversee the student volunteers and provide a higher level of assistance if needed. To further support our resident physicians, we always have an attending physician available to discuss any questions or concerns you may have about a patient.

  • As long as you finish documenting each of your patient visits with your student volunteer, there will be no additional work to complete after your shift is over. Physician volunteers typically see no more than 4-6 patients during their shift.

  • By volunteering with Avicenna, you get to help patients with some of the greatest needs in our community. Our patients are incredibly grateful to our providers for the care they receive. You also have the opportunity to teach and mentor our medical student and undergraduate volunteers who are eager to learn from your expertise.

  • You will need to provide a copy of your license, NPI number, and immunization records. You will also need to verify HIPAA training.
