Who is Avicenna?

Avicenna is the Latinized name of the Muslim physicist, astronomer, mathematician and physician Ibn Sina (b. 980 CE). He is considered a father of modern medicine particularly for his discovery of the contagious nature of infectious diseases, the introduction of quarantine to limit the spread of diseases, and the introduction of experimental medicine and the use of clinical trials and efficacy tests.

It is our hope to recognize his excellence in medicine and promote a healthy lifestyle in our community through health screenings and education. As such, in the spring of 2009, a group of community members from the Muslim community got together to address a pressing need: inadequate healthcare coverage for the uninsured and under-insured members of the Champaign-Urbana community.

Inspired by this mission and the desire to embody the spirit of community activism in Islam, Avicenna Community Health Center (ACHC) was born. The ACHC is now incorporated with the State of Illinois as a Nonprofit Organization and is registered with the Illinois Attorney General’s Charitable Trust Bureau.

Donations to ACHC are tax-deductible as it is qualified by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) Tax Exempt Public Charity.
